Decor Tips. Classy Glass: How to Use Glass To Spice Up Your Living Room

Living room décor seems to be continually evolving, and one of the newest trends that is catching everyone’s eye is glass décor. Although it’s true that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, there’s nothing wrong with using a bit of glass to add a unique industrial vibe to your home. So how can you use glass jars and other miscellaneous glass items to create some fantastic décor pieces? Here’s what you need to know.

Garage Full of Old Mason Jars? Turn Them Into Lamps

Mason jars make great lamps, and they offer a stunning array of versatility. One great strategy is to turn your  mason jars into hanging pendant lamps . This DIY craft is easy to complete on a budget, and looks fantastic. To start, you’ll need to pick up some vintage-style light bulbs, like the Vintage Edison Squirrel Cage light bulbs by Globe Electric. These bulbs cost about $7 apiece, so they are on the pricy side, but according to the manufacturer, each light bulb will give you 3000 hours of use (the average incandescent light bulb lasts about 1000 to 1200 hours). You’ll also need a lamp socket. Punch a hole through the Mason jar lid that is wide enough to accommodate the socket, then feed the socket through the lid. You should be able to screw the lid into place around the socket. Next, just rotate the bulb into position and screw the lid onto the jar. Hang your new lamp in the area of your choosing, plug it in, and be amazed at the new industrial vibe your living room now has.

Use Glowing Paint to Create Your Own ‘Starry Night’

If you have a dark living room, one easy way to brighten it up is to use glowing glass to add a whimsical, cosmic element. To start, you’ll need a large glass pane, jar, or vase, some glow-in-the-dark paint, a bowl of water, and a paintbrush. First, you’ll want to wash your glass to ensure it’s clean. Next, use your paintbrush to stir the glow-in-the-dark paint. Apply the paint to the inside of the jar by dabbing the brush – you want to create small dots with the paint. The more dots you can make, the better. Try experimenting with different colours for even better results. Once the paint is try, take it into a dark room and watch a constellation of lights unfold before your very eyes.

Ombre Art: Create Gorgeous Contrasts with Glass Vases

Do you have a boring old glass vase lying around the house that you’ve been thinking of throwing out? Before you pitch it, try turning that run-of-the-mill vase into a beautiful piece of ombre art. For this project, you’ll need a glass vase, some rubbing alcohol, spray paint of varying colours, a cardboard box or drop sheet, and paper towels. First, use the rubbing alcohol to clean the vase inside and out. Then turn the vase upside down on the drop sheet and start spray painting! Make sure you keep a steady stream of paint flowing, and keep the vase-to-paint-can distance consistent. Try using different colours on different parts of the vase. If you want the paint to last, add a coat of sealer. Once the vase is dry, you’re ready to pick out a spot to display your ombre vase.

Glass is a versatile material that makes it easy to create all sorts of great home décor items. Try experimenting with glass and see what kinds of décor projects you can come up with – your living room will never look the same again.
