Chocolate, Ice Cream & Your Sofa: Because Delicious Accidents Happen!

Attention chocolate and ice cream lovers! There’s nothing better than relaxing on your favourite sofa with dessert—until your chocolate sundae decides to become part of the upholstery.

How to Clean Chocolate or Ice Cream from a Fabric Sofa

First, check the sofa’s cleaning label.

Look for the upholstery cleaning code: W generally allows water-based cleaners, S requires a solvent-based cleaner, W/S allows either, and X means vacuuming or professional cleaning only.

For a W-rated fabric, carefully lift away any excess chocolate or ice cream with a spoon. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with cool or lukewarm water. Dampen a clean white cloth with the solution and blot from the outside of the stain toward the centre.

Don’t scrub—you’re cleaning your sofa, not sanding a deck!

Blot again with another cloth lightly dampened with clean water to remove soap residue, then press with a dry towel and allow the area to air-dry completely. Never soak the fabric, and always test your cleaning solution on a hidden area first.

For an S-Rated Fabric

If your sofa has an S cleaning code, do not use water or a water-based cleaning solution, as this can leave water marks or damage certain fabrics.

Carefully lift away any excess chocolate or ice cream with a spoon or dull-edged utensil, taking care not to spread the stain further.

Use a water-free upholstery cleaning solvent specifically approved for S-code fabrics. Before treating the stain, always test the product on a small, hidden area of the sofa and follow the cleaner manufacturer’s directions.

Apply a small amount of the solvent to a clean white cloth rather than directly onto the sofa, then gently blot the stain from the outside toward the centre. Do not rub, scrub or oversaturate the fabric.

Continue blotting with a clean section of the cloth until the stain is removed, then allow the area to air-dry completely in a well-ventilated room.

If the stain remains—or you are unsure about using a solvent on your particular upholstery—it’s best to contact a professional upholstery cleaner rather than risk damaging the fabric.

Cleaning Chocolate or Ice Cream from Leather

Remove the excess immediately, then gently wipe the area with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Dry it with another clean cloth. For anything remaining, use a cleaner specifically approved for your type of leather—never bleach, household sprays or abrasive cleaners.
