Decorating for Halloween Like an Adult

Published by Clive Braude on 24th Oct 2019

Halloween brings out the kid in all of us, but that doesn’t mean it has to bring out the child in your decorating style! There are plenty of ways to decorate like an adult for this spooky, playful season.

Start by sticking to a neutral colour palette. Yes, there will be orange and black. But the orange will be on the burnt side, not the neon side, and beside those you’ll find creams and maybe a dark yellow. The beauty of a neutral colour palette is that it will take you all the way from Thanksgiving into Halloween, and if you leave it up a day or two late you won’t be annoying yourself with out of season decorations.

Once you have landed on a colour palette that suits you and your space, head outdoors! While you may think that most decorations are found in stores you might be surprised to hear that most interior designers suggest a walk in the woods - or to the Farmer’s Market - is just the ticket. Gourds, pumpkins, branches, fallen leaves, pussywillows, and seasonal flowers all make beautiful, sophisticated Halloween decor.

Dress it up! Go raid your tickle trunk and spend the month of October having fun with your more outlandish outfits! Plus, that silly hat that you never wear, but always say is going to be your next costume would look perfect as a centrepiece, or on your hall table. And talk about a conversation starter.

Lastly, don’t buy single use decorations. Decorating like an adult means thinking sustainably both for the environment, and for your finances. If you are going to purchase decor, think of what you can use again next year. Purchase totes or storage boxes to safely store your decor until next year.

Happy Halloween!
