How to Design a Gallery Wall

Published by Clive Braude on 16th Aug 2019

Gallery walls are such a fantastic way to add personality and style to any room in your home. A gallery wall makes a great focal point in the living room, beside a staircase, in the bedroom, or even the bathroom. It is a stylish way to display sentimental photos or just show off your child’s masterpieces.

Here’s how to get started designing that wall!

First off, choose a space. You will need a wall large enough to accommodate frames and art of different sizes - a key element to the gallery wall. Preferably a wall that is located in a room without too much visual clutter. A well done gallery wall will look busy, but balanced, and if you choose a wall in a room with a lot going on, it will just look cluttered. This is why gallery walls next to staircases is so appealing. Other than a set of stairs, you have a blank canvas!

Once you have chosen your space, choose a focal point. Perhaps this is a family portrait, or a painting by a loved one, or a piece of art like a tapestry or woven wall hanging. Your focal point doesn’t necessarily need to be placed in the centre of your display, but it will influence the number of other pieces, the colours of the frames, and the style of the other pieces you choose.

Now for the fun part. Now that you have chosen both the wall, and your focal point, it’s time to start playing around with different orientations. Start by placing your works of art on the floor, before hanging them on the wall. Try out different arrangements and placements. Try your focal point in an off centre orientation, arranging the other works around that. Once you have landed on an arrangement that you like, get hanging!

Don’t be afraid to get creative with the elements in your gallery wall. For example, you can hang plates, create a wall of pottery mugs, include shelves for candles and small souvenirs. Your gallery wall is all about expressing your own personality and design style. Get creative!
